Today’s topic… the new search engine

Google’s reign in search is being challenged. There’s a new wave of search habits emerging that is reshaping the digital landscape… you know it as, social media. 

Imagine you’re planning your next vacation and want to find the perfect spot. Instead of starting with Google (as we’re used to), you might go to Instagram. You scroll through your feed and come across some travel photos shared by influencers and friends. One place really stands out— coloured houses (clinging to cliffs) in Italy overlooking the Mediterranean. 

Curious, you head over to TikTok and dive into videos from people who’ve actually been there. You get a feel for the local vibe, discover hidden gems, and hear personal stories—all through quick, engaging clips. The content feels way more authentic and relatable than would say a bunch of search results or travel site reviews you might have previously received from a straight Google search. 

You then head to Reddit to help with some of the planning details for a trip to the Amalfi Coast—best time to visit, what to pack, and so on.

In this example, social media has become your primary go-to search tool, offering a blend of real-life experiences and personal recommendations that help guide your vacation plans. This shift reveals that we’re increasingly turning to platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, and (I know you’re thinking it) yes, even AI tools like ChatGPT to find what we need, moving away from traditional search engines.

The Appeal of Social Search 

This appeal lies in its ability to deliver real-life experiences, influencer recommendations, and user-generated content that feels more relatable and trustworthy compared to traditional search results. It’s a fundamental change to how we (and your consumers) discover information, keep up with trends, and make decisions.
